Cookery Competition Training

A masterclass on Live Practical Competitions – ‘From Brief to Critique’ was held at Ara Institute in Christchurch during the school holidays. Numbers were limited and schools needed to apply to attend. We were fortunate to be able to send along two students – Grace Williams and Julia Burnett, accompanied by Ms Anderson.

They joined Mark Sycamore, a member of the New Zealand Olympic Culinary team & a tutor at Ara for an insightful three hour session aimed to help students prepare for entering live practical competitions. The session was split into three sections and began with an overview on deciphering competition criteria and rules using a specific competition example. In section two the tutor demonstrated a competition dish using the competition example. The final section discussed how the judging process works and critiqued the demonstrated dish using the judges marking schedule.

Grace, Julia and Ms Anderson really enjoyed the masterclass and gained a great deal from it. The level of dedication required to be successful in cookery competitions was made clear, but all remained keen to pursue this aspect of Food Technology.
