4 GHS students attended the NZ Grass Kart Championships held in Milton during Easter weekend
The NZ Kart Championships are held every Easter and hosted by various Clubs throughout the South Island consisting of clubs from Invercargill, Dunedin, South Otago, Cromwell, South Canterbury, Mid Canterbury, Christchurch, Kaikoura and Greymouth. A large number of South Canterbury Family Kart members travelled South to Milton where the NZ Champs were hosted by the Otago Clubs for 2017, with approximately 140 Karters entered.
The weather during the week leading up the to the weekend was very, very wet as we all know, which left ground conditions sodden to say the least. Luckily the competitors had two fine days with two great tracks although the Saturday track did cut up rough to add an extra challenge for racing. Two very demanding days of full on competitive and exciting racing led to the below results with Kate Brown dominating the Ladies 0 –205 Grade winning every race. Flynn Coskerie, in his first year in the Junior Grade, raced consistently throughout the weekend to claim victory followed by Jordan Rae in 4th place. Kurt Bayliss had a busy weekend racing in two Grades – firstly the Lifans where he finished 3rd and then in the 0-205 4 stroke air cooled finishing 4th. At the conclusion of racing on the Sunday, the Champion of Champions trophy is raced for which is where each of the first two place getters in the Senior Grades race off against each other, and for the second year running this was won by Kate – it was a very exciting and close finishing race as Kate spun out coming into the last corner but managed to pull it round and cross the finish line first
Jacob Cunniffe (who attends Geraldine Primary School) in his first year in the Intermediate Grade provided some outstanding driving to finish a very creditable second. Results were:
