This year we had a young team playing in the Coaches Cup Tournament held in Oamaru. They had lost ten players from last year’s successful runner up team that played in the Tournament in Greymouth and were one of the youngest teams there with players from Years 9-12. The boys stepped up and played some top level Hockey. Their skills improved and there was nothing left in the tank at the end. All players represented GHS admirably and we received many lovely comments during the week.
First up we played Roncalli and due to exceptional defence, we drew nil all. Then we played Papanui (who ended up 3rd ) and lost 4-2 which still put us in the top 8 teams. We had some close games following this but couldn’t manage a win unfortunately. Despite this the boys improved their Hockey skills and confidence as the week progressed and played one of their best games against Central Southland on the last day. Zettlin McAtamney-Rasch captained the team very well and Sam Sullivan was our Most Valuable Player, which was well deserved as he was outstanding in goal. We also had fun exploring Oamaru, Escape Dunedin, Baldwin St, Moeraki and Elephant Rocks in our spare time.
This team looks like it has lots of promise for the future and it will be exciting to watch them in action over the next couple of years.
Thank you to all the parents who were there every day to support the team and also special mentions to Logan Sowden who gave up a week of school to be our amazing Umpire, Coach Andy Smith and Manager Anna Guerin.
