School Holiday Achievements
SISS Mountain Biking
We had 3 students competing in the SISS MTB Championships held in Dunedin on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th October.
The event was attended in record numbers at Signal Hill in Dunedin and tracks were riding just beautifully on the Friday practice morning, before the heavens opened in the early afternoon, giving competitors a taste of things to come!
Saturday dawned clear and nice but soon the clouds rolled in and just the riders got on the track for their Downhill seeding run, the storm arrived ... ensuring the weekend would be all about survival in the mud.
Connor, Cameron and Kate did themselves proud in a very competitive Downhill field and Kate took our the U20 Women's title in a race where just getting to the bottom was a genuine achievement.
Afternoon bought more rain as the Super D took place (Downhill course with some climbing injected to add misery!). Again we saw standout rides from Kate and Connor for a 1st and 3rd respectively.
Sunday dawned clear but the mud was there to stay for the XC race. Kate fought hard for another title but had to settle for 2nd in the end. Cameron had a great ride to finish 5th in his Grade.
GHS punched well above their weight once more, placing 14th out of over 40 schools and with only 3 riders, definitely one of the smaller teams.
Conor Coley-Smith, Alex Hayes and Bede Fisher were in the South Canterbury Under 14 Representative Rugby team that won the Hanan shield recently (first time ever for this Grade!).
Samantha James played in the School Girls Hanan Shield team that came 2nd, only losing to Canterbury in the last few minutes.
Under 48kg (SI) Caleb Orange and William Eason - 7th
Under 65kg (SI) Chase Warena and Kieran Chisholm - 4th
Under 18 (SI) Hamish Prattley, Eric Bolt (former student) and Mr Blogg ( coaching not playing) 4th.
National Duck Calling Champs
Quinn Foley-Smith placed 3rd in the Junior Grade and Patrick Foley-Smith placed 12th in the Open Seniors National Duck Calling championships.
Sam Guerin - U15 Boys - 3rd
Bridget Hussey - U15 Girls - 3rd
Emma Wood, Rachel Harford, Libby Smith and Rebecca Skinner - Collier Cup (National Primary tournament).
They had an outstanding tournament, finishing 7th equal - a massive improvement on last year. Top 8 was their goal but we all thought it would be out of reach. Apparently the last time the South Canterbury Collier Girls had a top 8 finish was in 1986. We are all very proud!!
Logan Sowden (Captain), Ben Wyborn, Finn O'Kane - Primary Hatch Development - 3rd equal
Elsie Talbot, Arabella Acland and Kristin Schnoveld - Primary Collier Development - 4th
William Wilson was in the Mid-Canterbury Hatch Hockey team that competed in Auckland in the holidays. He was also named ‘Most valuable Player’ for his team.
South Canterbury Representative tournaments:
12th Grade Girls - Anna Barrie and Taya Wynn - 6th
12th Grade Boys - Quinn Claridge - 11th
13th Grade Boys - Black Team - Matt Harding and Jack Barrie
Green team - Tom Leov and Robert Furrer
14th Grade Boys - Ben Cosgriff - 5th
15th Grade Boys - Karma Gyeltshen - 4th
Flynn Sugrue represented Aoraki at the Sydney International Soccer Tournament in the holidays. They were placed third in their age group. Flynn only conceded four goals for the whole tournament.
Stephen Harding was a member of the NZ Senior Boys team competing in the 2017 AUS Schools Orienteering Championships. His team won the Senior Boys Relay in the Relay event.
Well done Stephen.
We had a number of staff and students competing in this event. Our best team included Kate Brown and Amelia Houston who placed 2nd in the Junior Women's event.
Well done to all of those who completed.
Charlotte Harding, Amelia McKeown and Ben O'Kane represented South Canterbury at the Inter Regional Cross Country event held on 28th September. Amelia was team Captain for the Year 8 Girls and Ben was team captain for the Year 8 Boys. Both spoke at the Prizegiving.
This was held on Tuesday 24th October. We had a great day with 4 students competing:
Both Amelia and Arabella were selected for the South Canterbury team to compete at the South Island Primary Tournament.
