This is our last newsletter for 2017 and as we finish, I am reflecting on the highlights of the year.
The most distinctive aspect of this year is the retirement of so many of our long serving staff along with others moving on to travel or take up other opportunities, which has represented around 25% of our staff. This has presented the opportunity to look at who can take up these new positions but also how do we maintain the supportive school culture that these leaving staff have been part of.
At our Junior Prizegiving last Friday we said a final thank you to the following who are leaving:
Miss Amy Ross, Mrs Sangeeta Chaudhari, Ms Jill Roberts, Ms Mel Pile, Mr Simon Keeley, Mr Mark Romans, Mrs Doreen Callow, Mr Richard Ramsay, Mrs Yvonne Smith, Mr Peter McCaskill and Mrs Shirley Lindroos.
These staff will be sadly missed by our school community. I thank each and every one of these staff for their contribution to making Geraldine High School the great school it is today.
Other highlights have been:
The Board has had a focus on property which has included the new Science Labs, the Alt Ed classroom relocation, the purchase of a 19 seater School Bus, a new Outdoor Education Gear Shed and extensive IT Infrastructure which has meant we continue to deliver the best learning environment for our community.
We started having specific assemblies dedicated to raising career awareness for our Yr 10 -13 students on what it is like to be in a certain business. This new initiative is called Pathway Assemblies and it began with Guest Speakers from The Running Duck Cafe, Thompson's Construction and Barkers.
The modernised Science Labs which will provide greater collaborative teaching and learning for all. We have a focus as a Board on ensuring that we keep moving with property improvements so that teaching and learning for staff and students is in engaging spaces.
Our second year of the very successful Conference Days where parents/caregivers along with their son or daughter meet with their Vertical Form Teacher to discuss academic priorities, the holistic development of their child, and the pursuit of personal excellence.
And the newly created Student Led assemblies, organised and run by our Student Exec team and involving all of our Year 13. This is a great example of student agency and leadership; and having attended some of these - they have been informative, fun and celebrate student achievements across all areas of our school.
Thank you for your support of the Geraldine High School Community in so many ways this year whether it is assisting on camps or school functions, coaching sports teams, or attending the variety of students events that have occurred throughout this year.
We look forward to seeing you and your child at the start of next year and wish you a safe and enjoyable Christmas Break and New Year.
