Geraldine High School is once again represented in the South Canterbury Secondary School Girls (SSG) Rugby competition. We have a small, but dedicated and enthusiastic, squad of Year 9-13 girls. Some of which have played before and others who are first time players. We welcome any more girls that are interested in playing Rugby.
The players are under the guidance of three experienced coaches, all of who are fathers of girls in the team: Mark Woodley, Jonathan Doig and Brian Mowat-Gainsford . We are grateful for their time and expertise.
The girls have already attended an upskill and question session in Timaru hosted by 3 Black Fern players. A great opportunity to learn some new skills, meet up with players from other schools, and see the Womens Rugby World Cup. Tristram Johnston from the SCRFU is also running a series of “pop up” skill and drill sessions here at school during selected lunchtimes.
The South Canterbury SSG 2018 Rugby season kicks off on Wednesday 2nd May with a “Gala Night” at Alpine Energy Stadium (AES) in Timaru, followed by a 3 week Under 15 and Under 19 pre-season competition. This is the perfect opportunity for any girls interested in playing to ‘have a go’. The SSG competition commences on 30th May and runs for 10 weeks. Games are played on Wednesday afternoons in either Geraldine, Timaru or Ashburton.
