New BOT Chairperson

Last week saw Mr Ian Hyslop finish as the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees.  The Board met and  elected Mrs Sally Prattley as Chairperson for the remainder of the 3 year Term until BOT elections in April next year. Mrs Prattley is a Surgical Nurse at the Bidwill Trust Hospital.  She has three children, the youngest two - Charles  finished Year 13 this year and Louisa  is currently in Year 11 at Geraldine High School. Mrs Prattley was previously on the Geraldine Primary School BOT for 6 years and on the Geraldine High School PTA for many years before being elected to the Geraldine High School BOT for the current term. She has a wealth of experience and a sound knowledge of governance required in schools and we look forward to her contributions as the Chairperson.

NCEA Begins

The start of NCEA was the week before last with some of the larger Maths, English and Science exams occurring. This is an important time for our senior students as it is the culmination of their learning throughout the year and for Level 2 students it becomes the qualification that leads to tertiary entry in many courses throughout the country.

Year 10 Challenge Days and Prize Giving Evening

Last Friday evening I attended the Year 10 Challenge Prize Giving. I was very impressed with the students and how they both presented themselves and how they spoke about the challenges faced this year. We were fortunate to have Mr Drew Brown, our Head of Outdoor Education as the guest speaker and he had a strong message for all the students to ‘dream and follow those dreams and passions into action’ which he explained through his own life journeys of travel and work in the outdoor environments which he has a connection with. My thanks to the dedicated staff who make these challenges occur throughout the year - Mrs Shirley Lindroos, Mr Drew Brown, Mrs Yvonne Smith, Mr Tony Doy and Mr Haden Powell.

Year 8 Taster Day

Last week we had our second year of running a Year 8 Taster Day. This is where our current Year 8 students and any new  students coming to Geraldine High School next year experience a day as a Year 9 which is very different from the Home-room based structure that occurs at Year 7 and 8. By all accounts the students enjoyed this opportunity and my thanks to Mr Mark MacKenzie for organising this day along with the teachers involved in working with the groups.

Classroom Upgrades

If you have passed the school over the last few weeks, you would have noticed containers, trailers of rubbish and barriers around the Rangitata Blocks. This is due to 7 classrooms, our Year 7 and 8 Home-rooms, being emptied.  These are now in the process of being upgraded into modernised classroom spaces.
