Science Snacks
We have resurrected our Science Snacks that have gone by the way since COVID.
Our Year 9 and 10 students have had a two week window of choice where they get to pick something that they are interested in that is Science related but links to other disciplines. There are about 28 “Science Snacks” to select from. If there isn’t one there, we make one for them! New additions have been Radiography (reading X-rays and careers in this field) and Mountain Bike Mission (looking at a part of a mountain bike and the structure and technology behind it).
As students complete a Snack, they gain a certificate. Three Snacks earns them a diploma in a given field.
Science and food has been a hit - the chemistry of making pikelets, along with Farming Efficiency, Make a Zipline, Make a Catapult, Snapshots of Science (Photography), Artistic Science and Make a Science Movie.
The students are demonstrating the skills of group work, managing their time, meeting deadlines, curiosity and innovation. They will get another go at this at a later date this year.
The Human Body (or another mammal of your choice) - Year 10s.
The Year 10s have just completed a unit of research on a part of a system in mammals that they are interested in.
Their challenge was to find out about it - structure and function, explain what can go wrong, and then discuss how it can be fixed so the part can go back to functioning normally again.
They had to make a model of that system showing what can happen to it. There were some pretty awesome models as seen in the pictures attached.
