Careers/Pathways

Alla Pulham attended the Queenstown Resort College Experience event in the April school holidays. It was a way to find out about QRC’s internationally recognised Diploma's in Hospitality, Adventure Tourism Management and pathways to a degree, tour their campus and halls of residence, meet the staff and talk to current students, learn about the different career opportunities available within the tourism and hospitality industry, visit leading hotel and tourism operations with behind the scenes access and hear from respected industry professionals.

The U.C Campus Information trip on the 3rd May enabled a group of year 13 and year 12 students to receive information about the seven faculties (Arts, Business, Education, Engineering, Health, Law and Science), tour the campus and a hall or residence as well as receive valuable information about the Hall of Residence application process.

Presentations from Lincoln University (6th May) and the NZ Defence Force (13th May) gave students access to information about courses and career pathways.
The annual Year 11 Pathway Expo was held in Timaru on 15th May. This is a fantastic event exposing students to a wide variety of jobs available in South Canterbury.

 Upcoming Career Events:

  • Mon 27 May: Otago Tertiary Day (University and Polytechnic), Dunedin
  • Wed 29 May: Ara Snr Sector Day, Trades and Hospitality, Timaru
  • Thurs 30 May: Ara Snr Sector Day, Health, Timaru

Halls of Residence Application Process

The first step for students wanting to apply for a hall of residence at any university in NZ, Otago Polytechnic and Ara (Christchurch) is that they will need to register for a Common Confidential Reference Form (CCRF). Students are encouraged to do this as soon as possible. Note, even if you are planning a gap year you should still complete this as a CCRF is required for two years after a student leaves school. It doesn't take long to fill in and students are encouraged to select as many tertiary providers as it may be too early for students to decide exactly which university or polytechnic they want to go to.

The next step involves students completing a google form that will be emailed to them from the Careers department to provide information needed for the school to complete the CCRF.

Following this, students will be given more information in plenty of time about enrolling in their chosen course of study that they have to do before applying for a hall of residence (these open on 1st August)

Our Gateway students have started their individual learning programmes relating to the career pathway of their choice. Many have already started work experience one day a week and the Gateway placement co-ordinator is working tirelessly to get the others out on placement. This year's cohort's areas of interest include: Jewellery making, Midwifery, Mechanics, Building, Civil construction, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Early Childhood, Primary Teaching, Outdoor Education facilitator, Vet nurse and Pharmacy. A huge thank you to our local community for their continued support of having our students on work placement.
