In 2019 we installed a substantial 45 kilowatt solar system on the roofs of our school. This system provides up to 25% of the school’s electricity needs. A standard domestic system is only 5kw!
This project was funded with the support of the Temuka Geraldine Rotary, along with a group of local farmers; our wider community members, many of whom sponsored panels; and some community grants.
This system not only provides a substantial part of the energy needs for the school but also creates learning opportunities around renewable energy.
What next?
We are excited about our plans to increase our solar school capacity. We have more roofs upon which we can install panels and we aim to become carbon neutral (or even carbon positive!) as we do our bit to become part of the solution to a much larger global problem.
