Careers Update Term 2 Week 3

Otago Tertiary Day

A motivated group of Year 12-13 students braved a 6am start on Monday 5th May to attend the Otago Tertiary Day, thanks to their parents for also getting up so early to get them to the bus. Students were able to find out more about courses of study at both the University and Polytechnic in Dunedin as well as viewing halls of residences.

Yr 11 Pathway Expo

All of Year 11 attended the annual Pathway Expo in Timaru on 14th May which showcased employment opportunities in South Canterbury and informed students of various career pathways available. Such organisations included: Mito, Bcito, MBIE, Alpine Energy, Scarlett Hydraulics, Artikel & Swint, KPMG, Silver Fern Farms, Fonterra, Pye Group, Vetlife and Bleeker & Weith to name a few.

Girls’ Leadership Development Day – Thrive for Life

On Thursday 10th April, ten of our Year 12 and 13 students attended the Girls’ Leadership Development Day, themed Thrive for Life. Throughout the day, the students explored powerful topics such as motivation, self-belief, and overcoming imposter syndrome. The event featured inspiring guest speakers, and students were encouraged to engage by asking thoughtful questions—and even dancing between sessions to music with empowering messages.

It was fantastic to see our students fully embrace the experience, proudly stepping out of their comfort zones and showing real confidence. They represented our school with pride and enthusiasm, and several teachers from other schools took the time to comment on how impressive and engaged our students were. These young leaders truly did our school proud.

Queenstown Resort College Taster - by Thomas B

On 15th of April I had the chance to go to one of the most beautiful towns in New Zealand and get to know what it’s like to attend Queenstown Resort College (QRC).

I learnt about how the two courses they offer, Tourism Management and Hospitality Management, run while getting to know what it’s like being a student at QRC. We also learned about their fully paid work internship, which happens after completing term two and runs until term four. We also got to do some fun activities like a scavenger hunt in Queenstown, going on the gondola to see the fantastic views and going down the luge.

This was such a wonderful experience of understanding what it's like being a student in the most wonderful township, which is something I’m considering doing after my time at school ends.
