Choosing your subjects
When you choose your subjects for next year, it is important to consider a number of different things.
Choose subjects that:
- you are interested in. It makes it a lot easier to stick with it, even when it gets hard, if you are interested in it
- keep your options open. If you don't know what you might do when you leave school, it is better to take a range of subjects so you can do anything
- feed into your possible career path. If you know what you want to do, find out what subjects are recommended. Ms Munro, our Careers Advisor or https://www.careers.govt.nz/jobs-database/ can help you.
- that you are good at because why would you waste that natural talent?
At Year 11 you will take English, Mathematics and Science. You will also choose 3 additional options.
At Year 12 you will take English or Literacy for Work and 5 other subjects.
At Year 13 you will take 5 subjects.
NCEA
The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is the main qualification for secondary school students in New Zealand.
What will I need to gain each level of NCEA?
NCEA is recognised by employers, and used for selection by universities and other tertiary education providers in New Zealand and overseas.
- 60 credits at the Level (or above) of the qualification you are working towards
- Literacy – 10 credits from Literacy or Te Reo Matatini standards, or from a list of specified standards in a range of subjects
- Numeracy – 10 credits from Numeracy or Pāngarau standards, or from a list of specified standards in a range of subjects.
You only need to meet the literacy and numeracy requirements once, and you do not need to attempt them again for other levels of NCEA. If you haven't quite finished your NCEA at the end of the year you can still start working towards the next level.
