Careers & Pathways Update

Gateway

Gateway is a vocational subject designed to help students explore careers and encourage seamless transitions for Year 12 and 13 students into tertiary studies or the workforce.

Students complete a First Aid course and a Health and Safety course in term 1, along with learning how to construct a targeted CV and produce a household budget. In term 2 students go out on work experience once a week whilst completing a related individual course of unit standards in class.

Gateway applications close Friday 29th August. Students will be notified of the dates and times for the Gateway interview which parents attend with their child in term 4.

University Course Planning and Enrolment into Courses

Students have had the opportunity to attend course planning sessions from Otago Polytechnic, Lincoln, Otago and U.C universities. 

From the 1st October, students will need to enrol into their degree online.

Dual Enrolment

Dual Enrolment is where students study a Level 2 or Level 3 course once a week at the Ara Timaru campus and gain NZQA credits. You catch the Ara bus (or take your own transport). The school will assess student’s suitability to be able to catch up on the work they miss.

The Dual Enrolment 2026 Whānau Information Evening is on Tuesday 19th August at 6pm at the Ara campus in Timaru.  This event will start with a welcome and general information about Dual Enrolment,

how it works and what the application process is. Teaching staff will be at the event to be able to talk with learners and their parents about what is taught in Dual Enrolment programmes.
