Outdoor Ed Hawea Trip

Outdoor Ed Hawea Trip

Our class recently went on an unforgettable 6-day trip to Hawea, near Wanaka, where we were split into two groups Group A and Group B.

Group B went first, embarking on a kayaking adventure for three days. The weather wasn’t ideal, with cloudy skies and the occasional drizzle, but we powered through. One of the biggest challenges was that we had to make our own meals – breakfasts, lunches, and dinners – which was a fun but sometimes tricky task without much preparation using our basic gas cookers and backcountry packs. Another main challenge was having to go toilet in a long drop, not being able to have a shower and sleeping in tents for the week. We kayaked down the Clutha Of the Hāwea river with an unforgettable moment with all our friends only having a total of 3 people flipping!

Being split from all our friends was a bit daunting at first, especially as our groups were made up of mostly different people. It was a great chance to bond with new faces, but a little weird not having your usual crew around.

After kayaking, we switched gears and spent the next three days hiking. It was a huge challenge, especially with the hot weather, and the hike took a solid 7 hours to reach our destination starting at 10:30 am and finishing around 5:30 pm. Despite the heat and exhaustion, we pushed through, taking in the stunning scenery along the way. It was a tough trip, but we all learned a lot about teamwork, perseverance, and making the most of every situation.

This hiking went on for 3 days and along the way we went to some awesome waterfalls, bushbashing and tenting in the middle of a forest.
