The Primary Industry Academy (PIA) is essentially practical education for the real world. 90% of the course is based around learning and improving practical skills. GHS works closely with AgriLearn training, local industry experts\contractors and Primary ITO to offer skills in fencing, farm bikes, tractors, water supply, chainsaws and animal handling. Students practice at school in the extremely well resourced PIA area. A key feature of PIA is the large amount of voluntary community work undertaken.

Students in Year 11 go on a variety of field trips exposing them to a wide range of industry related careers. Year 12 sees all students out on a placement for one day per week in their area of interest. This may be at work on a dairy farm, sheep farm or in the forestry. Year 13 students complete Feeding & Pastures. All levels compete in the Young Farmer competition; and have consistently won the Top Aorangi Region TeenAg club and have enjoyed success locally, regionally & nationally.

Students are offered a large variety of opportunities to learn wide and varied skills and find their area of passion within the Primary Industry. They also gain a National Certificate in primary skills, plan, organise and run events, mentor and host other schools and make valuable industry contacts. GHS PIA students have an enviable reputation as competent and tireless workers who are obliging and keen to learn.
