Mathematics

Mathematics

LEVEL ONE - Intermediate

Code: L1MAT

Course Description

This course covers the strands of Algebra & Number, Measurement & Geometry, and Statistics & Probability. In a range of meaningful contexts, you will be engaged in thinking mathematically and statistically. This course has less algebra content than the Mathematics for STEM Careers Level 1 Mathematics course (L1MSC). You will solve problems, model solutions and communicate your findings. Two versions of this course will run, one for students who pass the numeracy corequisite by the end of year 10, and one for students who will need to prepare to resit this during year 11.

This course fits most Vocational Pathways.

Course of Study

This course contributes NCEA Level 1 credits.

Assessment

Two internal and one external standard offering a total of 15 credits.

Costs

Students are required to have their own calculators for this course. If a student is intending on doing further study in Mathematics, a Casio fx9860 graphics calculator (approximately $170 - although available at less than half this price via https://www.come-here.co.nz/) is recommended. A Casio fx82 scientific calculator (approximately $50) is recommended for students not planning on studying Mathematics beyond Level 1.

LEVEL TWO - Mathematics for STEM Careers

Code: L2MSC

Course Description

This course is strongly recommended for you if you wish to pursue tertiary study for a career which uses Mathematics heavily (e.g. health sciences, medicine, engineering, architecture, economics, computer science). It has more of an algebraic focus than the L2MAT course and introduces students to the mathematical modeling tools in calculus (a natural extension of coordinate geometry and algebra with extensive real world applications in many careers). You will be required to solve problems in a logical manner and report your findings in a clear and precise way.

This course is recommended to students who followed the Level 1 Mathematics for STEM Careers course, and who have a pathway including further science, technology, engineering or mathematical studies, or careers based in these areas, or just have an interest in pursuing school mathematics to a high level.

This course fits most Vocational Pathways.

Course of Study

This is a Level 2 course with standards covering algebra, trigonometry, probability, statistics and an introduction to calculus.

Assessment

A combination of internal and external standards allowing up to 20 credits.

Costs

A Casio fx9860 graphics calculator (approximately $170 - although available at less than half this price via https://www.come-here.co.nz/) will be required by students taking this course.

Entry Criteria

Students will need to have completed a Level 1 Mathematics course gaining at least 15 credits. For automatic entry they will need to have gained an Achieved or higher in the Level 1 Mathematics externally assessed standard Demonstrate Mathematical Reasoning (1.4). Further entry will be at the discretion of the Mathematics staff.

LEVEL TWO - Mathematics

Code: L2MAT

Course Description

This course is designed for you if you wish to pursue a career needing above Level 1 Mathematics but do not want to pursue the most academic Level 2 mathematics course (L2MSC)...For the majority of students not having followed the Level 1 Mathematics for STEM Careers course, and who are not involved in PIA or Gateway, this is the recommended course for year 12. This course also allows you to gain the Level 2 Mathematics credits which are required for entry to many courses of further study and occupations.

This course fits most Vocational Pathways.

Course of Study

This is a Level 2 course with standards covering algebra, trigonometry, probability and statistics, with the possibility of an introduction to calculus.

Assessment

A combination of Internal and External standards allowing up to 17 credits. All standards are linked to Numeracy Level 1. The Statistics standards are linked to Literacy.

Costs

A Casio fx9860 graphics calculator (approximately $170 - although available at less than half this price via https://www.come-here.co.nz/) will be required by students taking this course.

Entry Criteria

Students will need to have obtained at least 10 credits from Level 1 NCEA Mathematics Achievement Standards. Further entry will be at the discretion of the Mathematics staff.

LEVEL TWO - Mathematics for Work

Code: L2MFW

Course Description

This course is designed for you if are taking PIA or Gateway and do not want to take your study of Mathematics beyond Level 2. It is a course based around developing practical problem solving skills and equipping you to confidently handle Mathematics you may need in the future. This course is not recommended for PIA or Gateway students who may wish to progress on to a Level 3 Mathematics course next year, or who intend to enter a career where a more academic understanding of Mathematics would be required.

This course fits non-academic Vocational Pathways.

Course of Study

This is a Level 2 course including only internally assessed standards which could include studies across trigonometry, graphical methods, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, probability, and statistics.

Assessment

Internal standards with around 12 credits on offer in total. All standards are linked to Numeracy Level 1. The Statistics standards are linked to Literacy.

Costs

A Casio fx82 scientific calculator (approximately $50) is recommended for students taking this course.

Entry Criteria

There is no specific entry criteria for this course.

LEVEL THREE - Mathematics with Statistics

Code: L3MAS

Course of Study

This course gives you skills to continue on to University in any field with a basic understanding of statistics together with algebraic processes to solve simultaneous equations, and network methods, that have applications in many fields. You may opt to take this course together with the Mathematics with Calculus course as they complement each other. This course fits most Vocational Pathways.

Assessment

A combination of internal and external standards allowing up to 19 credits.

Some of the internal credits contribute towards UE Literacy.
