LEVEL ONE

Course of Study

Drama students cover drama techniques, elements and conventions within an extensive course covering the Clowning Theatre Form in historic and contemporary contexts, devising and script work. Additionally, there is more focus on technical aspects such as lighting, costume and set design. Students will develop their ability to explore and reflect on drama processes through viewing live professional theatre performances and directed portfolio work.

Up to 20 NCEA Credits

Costs 

As part of the course there is a requirement to view and reflect on live performances. There will be a request for a small donation to cover transport. (The department will cover the cost of the show/s). There will be no other cost for this course.

LEVEL TWO

Code: L2DRA

Course of Study

Drama students will further develop drama techniques, elements and conventions within an extensive course covering Shakespeare and the Elizabethan Theatre Form in historic and contemporary context, ensemble devising and also more advanced scripted work. Students will refine their ability to explore and reflect on drama processes through viewing live professional theatre performances and directed portfolio work. 

Assessment

Internal

  • Apply drama techniques in a scripted context 2.1 (4 credits)
  • Devise and perform a drama to realise an intention 2.2 (5 credits)
  • Use complex performance skills associated with a drama or theatre form 2.4 (4 credits)
  • Perform a substantial acting role in a scripted production 2.6 (5 credits)

External

  • Discuss drama elements, techniques, conventions and technologies within a live performance 2.7 (4 credits)

Entry Criteria

14 credits in L1 Drama or English or at the discretion of the HOD Drama.

LEVEL THREE

Code: L3DRA

Course of Study

This intensive course is focused around the study of the New Zealand Theatre Form in an historical and contemporary context through exploring a range of New Zealand plays. At this level students are required to show a skilful integration of drama techniques, communicate meaning through advanced scripted work, and show the development of skills around the use of elements and conventions of Drama. Students get to perform in a full length play production, or they could choose to be the production director. Students will refine their ability to explore and reflect on drama processes through viewing live professional theatre performances and directed portfolio work.

Assessment

Up to 22 credits selected from the following standards:

Internal

  • Interpret scripted text to integrate drama techniques in performance 3.1 (4 credits)
  • Devise and perform a drama to realise a concept 3.2 (5 credits)
  • Select and use complex performance skills associated with a drama form or period 3.4
  • (4 credits)
  • Perform a substantial acting role in a significant production. 3.6 (5 credits)
  • Script a drama suitable for live performance 3.8 (5 credits)
  • Direct a drama performance 3.9 (5 credits)

Internal

  • Discuss drama elements, techniques, conventions and technologies within a live performance 3.7 (4 credits)

Entry Criteria

14 credits in L2 Drama or English or at the discretion of the HOD Drama.
