Sports Update Term 4
The new gym is cracking along and we are excited as this gets nearer to completion. If you want to know more about sports at Geraldine High School check out our Facebook page, Geraldine High School Sport where we post results, notices and photos.
Fees and Uniforms
Just a gentle reminder that fees for sporting events need to be paid and uniforms need to be returned asap.
Cycling
In our last school holidays Kyra Marett took part in the National Road Cycling champs and we are thrilled with her efforts at this event. She came second in the U20 Girls Road Race and then went on to take out the title and win the Under 20 Points race event. Keep doing great things Kyra.
Aoraki Sports Awards
This event was held at Caroline Bay Hall on Friday 1st November 2024. We had four students who were finalists in their categories: Ella Waldron (athletics), Kyra Marett (cycling), Ethan Hole (athletics) and Thomas Anderson (swimming). Grace Worner also received National Honours.
Ethan Hole was named overall Athletics champion.
We also celebrated Michelle Cramond being named a Community Good Sort for all her work in the area of Basketball at GHS.
National Secondary Schools Mountain Biking
In the last school holidays Lance Brodina competed in the Downhill race at the National Secondary Schools’ champs at the Adventure Park in Christchurch. Lance did really well considering he was up against the schools from throughout NZ and it was a steep and difficult course.
Aoraki Mountain Biking
Saturday 19 October 2024 saw three keen Mountain biking boys head to Mt Hutt for the Aoraki Mountain biking champs. They were Benaiah Courage, Lance Brodina and Isaac Johnston.
All three boys had a great day with some good results.
Isaac was 4th in Downhill (3.48) and 4th in X-country(34.40). Lance was 8th in Downhill(4.01). Benaiah was 7th in Downhill(4.21).
Chess
Over Labour Weekend, we had two students attend the Chess Power Champions Trophy tournament in Wellington.
Dylan Boyd (Y7) and William Kaufman (Y10) were invited to attend as a result of their high achievements over several South Island tournaments during 2024.
While neither of the boys placed, they won several games each over the Champions Tournament, displayed exceptional sportsmanship, respect for the players and organisers, and made the most of every moment there. A lot to be proud of and we are looking forward to more in 2025.
GHS Sports Committee
The Sports Committee are going great guns and are busy organising their next fundraiser which is the Ambrose Golf Tournament on Friday 22 November 2024 at Denfield golf course. We would encourage our families to support this event by entering a team, providing a raffle prize or simply a cash donation.
Funds raised from this event will be going towards the new gym and equipment for it.
