Principals comment 17th of February 2025

I have been impressed with how quickly we have settled into a new school year. There is a real buzz around the place with students making the most of the new gym at break times. Our senior students have been showing leadership within the vertical form structure working alongside the junior students and with their teacher to ensure an inclusive, safe environment has been established.

I want to take a moment to emphasize the importance of planning for success. The beginning of the school year is the perfect time for students to set clear goals, create a roadmap for achievement, and embrace new challenges that will help them grow both academically and personally.

The Power of Goal Setting

Success doesn’t happen by chance—it happens by design. Setting goals gives students a clear direction and a sense of purpose. I encourage all students to take some time to think about what they want to accomplish this year. Whether it’s improving in a subject, taking on a leadership role, or developing a new skill, having specific, achievable goals will provide motivation and focus throughout the year.

Regular Check-Ins and Adjustments

Setting goals is just the beginning. It’s equally important to regularly check in on progress and make adjustments where necessary. Students should reflect on their achievements, challenges, and areas for improvement. Teachers and parents play a vital role in this process, offering guidance and support as students navigate their journey. By reviewing goals periodically, students can refine their approach, stay on track, and celebrate their successes along the way.

Stepping Outside the Comfort Zone

Growth happens when we challenge ourselves. I encourage students to take chances in their learning by trying something new—whether it’s joining a new club, participating in a school event, or tackling a subject that feels difficult. Pushing beyond one’s comfort zone fosters resilience, confidence, and a love of lifelong learning. Mistakes are a natural part of progress and each challenge presents an opportunity to learn and improve.

As we move forward into the school year, let’s approach each day with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a commitment to personal and academic excellence. By setting goals, checking in regularly, and embracing new experiences, our students will build the skills and mindset needed for success.

Two students that have embraced these qualities are Head Student, Hunter Wilson, and Sports Leader, Tasman Pidgeon. The boys had an amazing journey over the term 3 holidays and Christmas holidays by completing the Te Araroa Trail. 3039km, 84 days, 100km over the last 25hours. All done at the tender age of 17.

I look forward to all of our students excelling in all facets of school life and outside pursuits over the year.
