Level 2/3 Geography Field Trip to New Brighton
Level 2/3 Geography Field Trip to New Brighton
The Level 2 and 3 Geography classes recently conducted field research at New Brighton Beach in Christchurch. Working in groups, students collected data to investigate why the shape of the beach differs between South New Brighton Surf Club and New Brighton Pier.
They measured wind speed and direction, wave period (the time it takes for waves to pass a fixed point), sand dune height, and the beach gradient from its lowest to highest point. With beautiful weather, the day was a breeze, and the scenic walk between data collection points made the experience even more enjoyable. The trip ended with lunch at local eateries and a relaxing stroll along the pier.
Students are now analysing the collected data to understand why the beach at New Brighton Pier is narrower and flatter, with lower sand dunes, compared to the wider beach with higher dunes at South New Brighton Surf Club. Both year groups will use this data for their first internal assessment, while Year 13s will also apply it in their end-of-year exam.
