Emergency Evacuation Procedures

Emergency Evacuation Procedures

Students move to the assembly area and line up in Whānau Classes. The evacuation assembly area at Geraldine High School is the year 7 and 8 playground area.

Staff on the way out, check their classroom to ensure all are evacuated. Close doors.

Nominated Block Wardens confirm blocks and classrooms are cleared. Report this to the chief warden immediately upon arrival at the assembly point.

Wardens will take copies of each Whānau Class to the assembly point. (These are printed regularly). Admin staff will take the daily Absences, Visitors and Staff sign-out logs to the assembly point.

Whānau Teachers complete rolls and return to the Hub immediately.

FIRE - Fire procedure

In case of a FIRE the bell will ring and the command to “Evacuate the building” will come over the speaker system

  • Move out and away from all buildings as quickly as possible

  • Stay calm and listen to your teacher

  • Everyone must move to the evacuation/assembly area and to line up in Whānau Classes. Whānau Teachers will check the roll. The roll is returned to the Hub immediately

  • No one may leave the assembly area until the Warden gives the instruction to do so.

EARTHQUAKE

If there is an EARTHQUAKE, do not run outside.

  • Teacher opens the door, everyone seeks cover under desks or tables, clasp your hands behind your neck and bury your face in your arms to protect your head.

  • Following the earthquake there may be an evacuation after the shaking has stopped. Do not wait for any bell, once shaking has stopped, move to the assembly area. An evacuation bell will ring soon after.

SHELTER IN PLACE

In a number of emergency situations, it can be safer to remain inside a building and not evacuate outside. For example, in storms, floods, high winds, chemical spillage, release of hazardous materials (toxic fumes) or when there are individuals with weapons or who may be violent in the vicinity of GHS.

If the emergency requires people to shelter-in-place, please follow the set of procedures in this link.

LOCKDOWN

A LOCK DOWN will be signalled by a sound that will get progressively louder through the speaker system.

  • If you are in a classroom, you must remain there and follow instructions very carefully.

  • Close and lock the doors and windows, pull curtains and move to a place in the room out of sight of the windows.

  • If you are out on the grounds or fields move to the nearest cover as fast as possible.

  • Remain silent and follow any instructions given by the staff or the police, as your safety will depend on this.
