Year 7 & 8

Our Year 7 and 8’s have the advantage of both worlds - a dedicated environment for their year levels and all the benefits of a secondary school with a programme designed to meet their needs and interests, building on the foundations of education developed

In their first two years at Geraldine High School, students are placed with a Homeroom teacher who teaches them the core subjects of Literacy, Numeracy and Social Studies.

When not in Homeroom, students are in classes with Specialist teachers for Science, Art, Drama, Maori, French, Music, Food Technology, Hard Materials and Textiles. They also get the opportunity to select a winter and a summer sport which they get to play for an hour a week in a timetabled period. This programme runs alongside their Health and Physical Education programme which is developed to encourage well-being of self and their communities.

Passionate and innovative staff and an established Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy, enables us to offer a future focused approach throughout all aspects of our curriculum. .Social Sciences are largely inquiry based and we are beginning to implement the new Digital Technology programme into our everyday classes.

Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) plays a key role in reinforcing learning by enabling students to make connections between what they have learnt in the classroom and outside. There are many opportunities for our students to be challenged, both in a local and a regional setting.

All our intermediate students enjoy the benefits of the school secondary environment which include:

• Role models in senior students
• School House system where leaders encourage the younger students
• Specialist teachers and facilities
• Own spaces around the school

Our overall aim is to develop capable, self-assured and self-directed life-long learners ready to succeed.
